West Coast States In Usa Map - The West Coast of the United States, also known as the Pacific Coast, Pacific States, and West Coast, is the coast where the American West meets the North Pacific Ocean. The term is commonly used in the United States of America. California, Oregon, and Washington, but sometimes includes Alaska and Hawaii, mostly in the U.S. through the United States Census Bureau.
With the exception of Alaska, the Democratic Party has dominated West Coast politics throughout modern history, and the states consistently vote Democrat in state elections. Four out of five West Coast states have voted Democrat in presidential elections since 1992, three of which have done so since 1988.

There are conflicting definitions of which states comprise the West Coast of the United States, but the West Coast always includes California, Oregon, and Washington as part of that definition. Cyclopedia Britannica refers to the North American region as part of the Pacific Coast, including Alaska and British Columbia. Although the encyclopedia acknowledged that Hawaii was included as part of the region, the editors wrote that "geologically the states have little in common."
Many dictionaries offer different definitions of West Coast. Lexicon limits the definition of West Coast to "the west coast of the U.S. from Washington to California."
However, the Macmillan Dictionary gives a more limited definition as "the west coast of America, including the Pacific Ocean".
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the West Coast is "the area along the Pacific coast of the United States that includes California."
Coastal Wetlands: More Than Just A Pretty View
The history of the West Coast begins with the arrival of the first known people in the Americas, the Paleo-Indians, who crossed the Bering Strait from Eurasia to North America on a land bridge called Beringia that existed between 45,000 BCE and 12,000 BCE. The northern half of the West Coast, particularly along the Washington and Oregon coasts, receives moderate rainfall, particularly during the winter months, while most of the California coast is dry year-round. Coastal areas experience much less heat in summer than inland areas. In politics, the West Coast often refers to the coastal states of California, Oregon, and Washington due to their political leanings. In 2017, Oregonian writer David Sarsohn described the West Coast as a "blue wall" of shared values on immigration, abortion, climate change and civil liberties.
According to a 2019 Pew Research Center survey, 72% of Pacific adults say "climate change has at least some impact on their community", more than any other region in the country.
Since 1992, three states have voted for Democrats without a tie in the presidential election, but Oregon and Washington also voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in 1988.

Although all three states vote reliably Democratic, as of 2020 none of the three states have had a Democratic presidential candidate win their party's nomination.
After the 2018 election, the Democratic Party controlled all but one seat in the United States House of Representatives.
In the 2010s, Democrats consolidated their political power on the West Coast. After winning a special election for a seat in Washington state in 2017, Democrats formed a trifecta of government in all three West Coast states.
In the House of Representatives following the 2018 US election, Democrats control all West Coast congressional districts except for Washington's third, which is represented by Republicans.

Although not usually part of the West Coast by political definition, Hawaii is a stronghold of democracy. Before statehood in 1959, Hawaii became a state that favored Democrats so much that they wanted a government for the region. However, Southern Democrats opposed the move because it would mean more votes against their position on many issues.
In 2016, the Democratic Party defeated a Republican Party in the state of Hawaii and captured all the seats in the state's upper house, the first time it has happened anywhere in the country since the 1980s.
Like the rest of the West Coast, Alaska is a reliable state for Republicans in presidential elections. Since statehood, Alaska has voted for a Democratic presidential candidate only once, in 1964. In 1960, the state elected Democrat John F. Voted for Republican Richard Nixon over Kennedy and has voted Republican without interruption since 1968.
According to the results of the 2020 United States Csus, 16 of the 20 largest cities on the West Coast are in California. Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Jose, among the 10 most populous cities in the country, lead the West Coast in terms of population with more than a million each, and Los Angeles is three times the size of San Diego. Citizens ranks fourth, fifth and sixth in terms of population behind these three cities, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland. Hawaii's capital and largest city, Honolulu, is the 13th largest city, and Alaska's largest city, Anchorage, is the 17th largest city on the West Coast.

Since the population of immigrants and their descendants on the West Coast is more precise than on the East Coast, their culture is much smaller. Alaska is well-known abroad and its residents do many activities unique to the state. Some of these events can be seen through the state's annual events, such as the Iron Dog snowmobile race from Anchorage to Nome and Fairbanks. Other activities include the World Ice Art Championship (Fairbanks) and the Sitka Whalefest (Sitka).
